Everything happens for a reason.
It’s what Ioney Mercer tells herself whenever she pauses to think about the circumstances of her life.
Why did her older brother die?
Why did her mother leave her with five brothers and sisters to raise?
Why did the only person she’d ever fallen in love with have to go?
Because everything happens for a reason.
Saying it was one thing. Believing it was another. And recently, the mantra had started sounding more like an annoying show tune that could easily be tuned out rather than the unfailing piece of truth she needed it to be.
But then, one silly little saying could only get you so far when your life was on the line yet again. More importantly, it meant absolutely nothing when your family was being targeted as well.
Things are starting to shake up in Chicago. Callahan Cordero has been released from prison. His first order of business: Revenge on the person responsible for putting him there.
With nowhere to run or hide, Ioney has no choice but to engage the enemy head on. The only question left to ask is whether she will stand alone, or if help will come from the most unlikely of places.

It was a normal day and I was outside walking my german shepherd, Sammie. She had just stopped to take care of her business and I noticed the hooded man who had been following us for quite some time, approach us. I had figured he just didn't want to be rude and pass us, so I didn't mind. Now as he was approaching us, I knew I was wrong. I started to tug on Sammie's leash to get her to hurry up. When she wouldn't budge, I started to panic. I started to pull harder and as the man got closer, he took something out of his pocket. A gun. I screamed as he took aim and fired. Hannah Jansen was 17, a senior in High School. Her family was rich, her dad was a lawyer and her mom, a heart surgeon. She was an only child, and had tons of friends at school. She wasn't the snobbish kind of rich girl. She was sweet and nice to everyone. When Hannah was supposedly, "killed", everyone was devastated. While her father was working hard to find out who did this, everyone else was either grieving, or arranging funeral plans. When a letter came in the mail a week after the incident, everyone was shocked. The letter read: Dear friends and family of Hannah Jansen, I have your daughter here with me at my house. She is in my bedroom tied up and gagged. I have a gun on my bedside table and if you do not agree to my conditions, I will be forced to use that gun. And because I don't want to do that, I want 1 thing, not that hard, right? No. I want $10 million. If you ever want to see your daughter again, leave the money at 4565 Oakwood Rd. on August 1st, 3:00 A.M. Today is June 1st, so you have approximately two months to get this money. If you fail to do this, your beloved daughter shall die. Sincerely, Tyler West P.S. Just to save you trouble, don't even try to search my name or find out where I live, because trust me, it won't work. I don't exist.

Leon supported the Martinez family with his earnings from being a gang member while their mother bought dope. With Leon gone, Cameron and her six siblings have rough times financially. She can do one of three things. 1. Join Leon's old gang, the Chicago Kings. 2. Be a stripper like her mother 3. Become a thief Since the first two don't remotely please her, Cameron went with the third choice. But she doesn't steal petty things such as wallets, T.Vs or anything so cheap. She decides to take from those who took the most precious thing from her; the gangs that haunt the streets and terrorize Chicago's citizens. Cameron goes around emptying the pockets of gangsters, stealing the dirty money they don't deserve. Yes, she realizes how dangerous and dumb this is, but she won't let her family starve.
