This story was inspired by the life of Kaui Hart Hemmings. She grew up in Hawai'i with her mother and step father, Fred Hemmings, an international surfing legend and an influential Hawaiian political figure. I took that information and made a conflict out of something well-known in Hawai'i; surfing. The shark attack was something that I imagined happening to surfers and it's one of my biggest fears. I added my wit because I didn't want it to be too serious. Kaui submitted many ideas and articles to editors, but received many rejection letters which is what happens in my story. Her name changed when she was officially adopted by Fred and that's why I chose this specific title. Kaui's father was a published writer and she wanted to follow in his footsteps.
