In the future, a scout ship, the UCNS Artemis and her small crew are sent to map out new solar systems for humanity to colonize and to make contact with alien life. Until they come across a mysterious distress beacon believed to be from a human vessel. Their investigation leads to catastrophe and now the four man crew must struggle to escape the hostile planet with the help of the crashed ship's lone survivor and the Artemis's unruly Artificial Intelligence that values its survival more than the crews.

However, when they quickly find a stowaway; Alana, eager to explore the stars- a barrage of asteroids ambushes them, forcing the Firebird to crash onto a desert planet for refuge: Gaia. Stranded and divided, the trio are caught in a battle between the native inhabitants, the Cergons, and the Data Control Center; a corporation secretly profits money through slave labor. Whether the three wanted to take part, they are split apart in the chaos. The D.C.C. captures the Firebird, Minokawa, Emi, along with a young Cergon, Oros. Left behind with the wary natives, Alana is forced to make an uneasy alliance and hastily plan a rescue. Minokawa is manipulated by the D.C.C. that her ship will be repaired, unaware of the ulterior motives to not only sell the Firebird, but to parade the witch as a trophy. Emi races against time to find Oros, to redeem herself for getting them all caught. If the trio don't band together to stop the D.C.C, their chances of escaping Gaia would prove to be difficult- the Cergons, alongside Oros, will never see the sunrise again.
