People can handle this issue in different ways. Some might have ignored it, pretending they can't see it, or others might get scared and maybe even called the police.
I believe most people had probably been angry and pulled the man into the house for a "long chat", which probably ended with the man being knocked out on the street or at least he got to sleep on the couch. This should have been enough for most people.
