Marlow Shepard was dead to Garrus and the remaining crew of the SR-1 for two whole years. They didn't know that in those two years, Cerberus had slapped her on some cement and begun the Lazarus Project.
During that time, Garrus realizes just how much the commander had meant to him, and seeing her alive and kicking evokes some very strange emotion that he'd never truly experienced before.
