A flash of lightning cracked the skies. 

The lightning reflected through the museum windows and shone on the strange relic.

She saw her reflection in the black gemstone set in the centre of the relic, and she was...  she was just herself.  Black hoodie, worn out jeans, tattered converse sneakers and an old leather bag slung over one shoulder.

The lightning flashed again.

And her reflection changed.

Her clothes morphed into some kind of embroidery.  Her bag disappeared. 

And then the cluttered din reached her ears. 

It was loud. Ridiculously loud. Almost like it was a market place filled with chickes and horses and ancient people...

SQUAWK.

Author's note: This fanfiction was inspired by the book and drama, Scarlet Heart/Startling by Each Step (步步惊心).  We took some major creative liberties with the plot, so unlike the book and dramas, it will not make references to actual history.

And I'm playing the role of a background character, destined to bring them together somehow. Honestly, I don't mind her getting together with the male lead but...
