After a year she manages to escape and heads back to Mystic Falls where she finds out that she is a witch. When she learns to control her powers she meets four people, who tell her about their life and what had happened to them. The more time Elena spends with them the more she comes to see them as family and vice versa. They tell Elena that they need to go to New Orleans to find the people who did this to them and she agrees. They soon meet the Mikaelsons and are told they need to stay with them for their protection. When there she begins to spend more time with the Mikaelsons and starts to develop feelings for a certain one.
