"Whose there?!" I spun around, my shoes squeak against the tile floor.
A light voice danced in the air. Their language was foreign, but I knew it was that of a woman's. It was raspy but familiar and soft. I remembered her voice, but I struggled to find the face to match her voice.
It was too dark to see her, or she was wrapped in an invisible cloak and just didn't want me to. "Maze...." Her voice drifted in and out. "It's... me." I caught my breath. "It's..... me."
I panicked. "I don't know who you are!" My voice strained. "Who are you?!"
Just before I could find composure, I felt the room crowding. There were more just like her.
I heard new voices. "Stop!" There were thoughts all around me. They each wanting one thing I couldn't offer. "Leave me alone!" I screamed. "What do you want?!"
The urge to run away became a thirst, but I was trapped among them.
All of a sudden, I heard a sharp hum. As melodious as it had sounded to me, every voice heard and hushed in its presence.
My throat tightened.
