Mack, a full time firefighter and part time saddle maker goes to New Mexico to deliver a saddle. The strained relationship with his busy girlfriend is lightened a bit when she agrees for him to pick her up along the way to accompany him on the trip. Along the way he saves a girl hitchhiker who solves a mystery for him and ultimatley saves his life. In the story some good deeds go unpunished but some come to fruition. He cannot wait to run the gauntlet out of New Mexico.

As firefighters for the 118 of the LAFD, Eddie and Buck face dangers quite often. However, when Eddie gets trapped under feet of mud, something shifts in the two friends and teammates. Buck becomes more skittish and Eddie becomes more questioning towards his friends. He knows something is up with Buck, but he isn't too sure he wants to know. Buck has severe abandonment issues. With Eddie being trapped under the well, he was sure that he hadn't been as scared as he was in that moment. The grief tearing at his chest followed him even months after the incident. Every time his eyes would land on his best friend, he was brought back to the moment he was on his hands and knees calling for him while digging.
