The year is 3169, 1153 years after a nuclear fallout devastated what used to be North America. The fallout opened a rift in the earth through which animal-like spirits called Remnants stepped into the light. In order to survive the near-constant onslaught of human survivors' attacks, the most pure of Remnants, known as Auras, fused with human hosts and spread from human to human in the same manner as a contagious disease-through contact with bodily fluids of one of the hybrids. These hybrids became known as Afflicted, and are characterized by their immortality, the supernatural powers they possess, and the powerful spirtiual entities residing within them.

Avery "Distance" Anderson stumbles across an Afflicted named Hitashi Tsubasa, who has no memory of who he is or where he came from. Through a series of escalating events, Distance is thrown into the world of Remnants, Auras and Afflicted. As Distance is drawn deeper and deeper into their world, he comes to realize that the immortal bodies and supernatural abilities he considers fascinating and amazing are more of a hex than a blessing to their owners.
