Hanna once had a normal life. That was until May 10th 1940 when the invasion began of Paris, France her hometown. 
Been aged fifteen she is more aware or what is going on than her eleven year old sister and writes all her feelings in her diary. She also has her parents and both sides of her grandparents at her big house located in the main town of France.

Every moment when she's outside, she regularly visits a ribbon shop and gazes upon the window for a scarlet ribbon, a ribbon for her hair.
