Set in 1930's America, this story revolves around a young girl who is struggling with her parents' separation. Her father is finally finished traveling the world, but upon returning from his last trip her mother suddenly becomes detached from him. Neither parent speaks to the other, and the little girl finds herself stuck in an awkward position between the two. As the year passes, the girl's mother begins seeing someone new, and from there things begin to unravel for the girl in ways that she couldn't have imagined.
This is somewhat of a mystery short story that I began writing as a teenager. It's taken a few years to get it written out, but it's a relief to finally have it published somewhere.

An Unexpected Moment
... that changes everything Sarah was starting her junior year of high school. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a pretty average blonde haired, blue eyed, teenager. She was neither in the popular group, nor one of the many cliched outsiders. Sarah was a nobody. She liked to blend in and lay low. It was her way out of not only this town, but her house. No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy. Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either. It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds. ------------------------------------------ This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. She appeared to have knowledge of her daughter's past life! Charlotte tries to solve the mystery of her daughter's death and the peculiar girl. She gets trapped in a morbid time machine which travels her to 1945, the year on her daughter's death, to try to save her from the events. Could this all be a coincidence or just some weird hoax? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Everyone has there own secrets. Some are dark and morbid, even when everyone in your town talks about it. You swore to secrecy that they wouldn't tattle, but you sometimes can't trust them, even if something goes terribly wrong that the truth has to be uncovered.... Warning: contains violence in some scenes. I have no interest or intention in actually killing someone or something. This is just a book I like to write and criminal minds in the '40s-'60s got me thinking of writing my very first book (which is this one). "We are here with you." She said and hugged me with gentleness. My shoulder sagged in relief as I hugged her back. She broke the hug and caressed my hair. "You know her?" Ryan asked, confusion evident in his voice. Wow!!! He never showed his emotion in public. Maybe his family being here made him act like a normal guy!! "Yes. I gave her photo to you after your meeting yesterday." His father said as he came by my side and patted my back. I gave him a small smile. I had never met him and his wife before, but the closeness between him and and my father was evident by the way his forehead held creases and by the tension all over his face. Still he was making me feel like a daughter to him. "Which photo?" He asked and suddenly the realization crossed his eyes. "Is she-" "The one you will be marrying Ryan. She is your soon-to-be wife."
