Loki's invasion was thwarted thanks to the interference of Thor and the Avengers. Sending Thor to Earth, however, had used up too much of the All-Father's magic. It would take him a month to be capable of stabilizing the power of the Tesseract, and, until then, he would not allow it onto Æsir soil. S.H.I.E.L.D., under pressure from Thor, arranged for Loki to be placed in comfortable confinement while they waited to be taken home. Loki, however, did not consider his confinement "comfortable."
