Too young for the Great War, convalescing after what he's told was scarlet fever and recuperating in a West Country castle, Jack's the object of intense female interest. He's a good-looking lad who has a way with women anyway, but he is also the only male around.
He isn't worried about the castle's ghosts, because he can't see them as they spy on him. He does wonder about the white figures he can see lurching under the trees at night. He's a bit concerned the voice in his head isn't his, but the knife in his bag...that's the thing that really worries him. How come he has a surgeon's knowledge of how to use it? And nightmares of having killed a woman with it?

Jack had almost hurt, or even killed, his friends by accidentally tripping over a curb and creating a massive blizzard. The Guardians were furious since the children's lives were momentarily put in serious danger by one of their own. After a heated argument between Jack and the others, he ran off. He was sick and tired of them not listening to him, always accusing him of something he didn't do, or in this case, unintentionally did. He went to his home again, but in the woods and out of sight. He ran into a witch, who he didnt even know lived there. She begged for some assistance in finding some herbs. Jack, however, declined the offer. She persisted, and that annoyed Jack. He had already been going through enough and this old witch wasn't helping. He then yelled at her to leave him be and to find her own "stupid plants". The witch wasn't happy, in fact, his blind rudeness angered her. So, she cursed him to mortality for 3 months. If he didn't learn how to handle hardships and what it's like being a human in that time frame, he would die. Jack soon meets an unexpected rescuer who takes him in and cares for him. Not only is he fighting against time, but the Boogyman decides to make Jack a target. Will he learn his lesson? Or will he die in 3 months time? If he is to survive, what will happen next? What will happen to Pitch? **This book is not all light hearted, there are serious topics included in it.**Complete

Told in journal entries and letters from Henry's sister Elizabeth, this reveals the realities and horrors of World War I, on the battlefield and in the homefront.
