There are various websites, which provide TRAIN PNR status service. They provide a single click, clean and easy interface for checking status of your reservation. You can check status of your reservation in any zone of country such as Northern Railway, Southern Railway, Western, Eastern, Central, South Central, and many other zones. Simply enter a 10-digit PNR number printed on top-left corner of ticket of yours and click on get status button. You can reserve your ticket generally up to ninety days before date of your journey. It increases chances of getting one confirmed berth. In case you do not get confirmed berths at time of advance booking or normal booking, then status of your reservation will show a WL (Waiting List) or RAC (Reservation against Cancellation).
RAC status shows that you as a passenger have one sitting accommodation inside train but not one reserved berth. Promotion of your reservation to one confirmed berth depends on length of waiting queue and because of cancellations of tickets at last minute towards journey date. If you have one RAC ticket then you can board train and sit on side chairs available. If one berth becomes vacant because of cancellation, then you get berth and other RAC ticket holder can make side chairs as one single berth.
A waiting list status of your ticket means that railway authority cannot guarantee you any sitting accommodation or berth in train. You will only get accommodation when specific number of RAC or confirmed ticket holders somehow cancels them. Railway officials determine waiting queue's maximum length for every train. Once they issue maximum limit of WL tickets, their system refuses to reserve any further requests and respond with a REGRET status. You cannot purchase one ticket indicating REGRET status. Railway reservations having WL or RAC status comprise of 2 numbers like WL30/WL22.
