Flag Stephens is a fifthteen year old who has a rough childhood. Being sent to be adobted because her real parents thought she wasn't normal, that crushed her. And worse of all, along with her sister, Kry, who's the one that isn't normal. They are later kidnapped and the forest their in experiences some unexplainable explosion, wiping out half the human race and "killing" Flag and Kry.
But that's not how it ends. Flag wakes up and meets new people who are truely different....way in the furture. 500 years in the furture. Where life for her will end.
