Rachel likes photographs because you can't tell by looking at a photo that anything is wrong with her or her family: The grief cannot be seen behind the glistening smiles. Makeup and photo editing hide the exhaustion caused by not sleeping. And Rachel's ears look like anybody else's. Rachel is pushed beyond many of her comfort zones when a new renter moves into the basement apartment. Are his intentions to befriend her sincere? Or does he only pity her like everyone else does? When communication is strenuous, they must ask themselves: is their love worth the effort? *Note: I am currently in the process of changing this story up a bit to be YA romance instead of NA romance.

She sees him every day, and each time, her heart races a little faster, hoping for something more than the casual, fleeting glances they exchange. He's charming, quiet, and always so close-within arm's reach, yet always just out of her grasp. Their interactions are brief, often accompanied by a charged silence that neither dares to break. There's an unspoken tension between them, a magnetic pull that neither seems able to resist, but something always keeps them from stepping past that delicate line between familiarity and desire. Whether it's the weight of their unacknowledged feelings or the fear of disrupting the fragile balance they've created, they remain suspended in a world of what-ifs. As their glances linger longer and the silence stretches between them, the question remains: will they find the courage to close the distance, or will they continue dancing around their feelings, too afraid to leap into the unknown?
