Sometimes, superstition has it right. It might not have been wrong to compare that dreadful signal to the blaring of the trumpets signaling the end of times. By the time they arrived, they knew us as if they had been watching us all along. Their invasion was swift, precise, and purpose-driven, ruined only by our own short-sighted counterattack that delayed the inevitable. And, during that delay, a small fraction of humanity managed to escape into the stars.
