Tess, a 17 year old girl, thought she was a normal girl. Until her father dies. He was all she had. She is devastated. She tries to drown herself. But when she breathes in the water, gills sprout on the sides of her neck. Webs form between her toes and fins on the sides of her calves.
She is hit with a view of her past. When she was small and lived underwater. With other people like her, called Two-Fins, and merfolk. With a newfound life inside of her, she escapes to the ocean.

I won't survive. I'm sure of it. Strong wind ruffles through my clothes and hardly allows my eyes to remain open. But when Pale gives Pearl a taste of a surfing competition at the human world, Pale discovers the truth that she is missing and people are preparing a reward for the people who find her.
