A tentative friendship develops between a Bright-Runner named Night Spark and an eight-year-old human boy named Jamie, who finds her wandering through the maple grove near his house. The race of Bright-Runners are legendary bio-engineers, possessing the ability to change shape and build structures out of their own body tissues to suit any and every circumstance - except the one Night Spark finds herself in, where she cannot seem to build herself a human mouth to speak with. Alienated from her own culture and reeling from the loss of her mentor, Night Spark must grapple with the possibility of spending the rest of her life on Earth, or risk the journey back to a world that is no longer home.
