The land of Lokshire has been at war with the Vars soldiers for thousands of years, and it doesn't seem like the war will end any time soon. The land's only hope is a prophecy that speaks of a Defender, Healer, Speaker, and Warrior uniting and fighting off the Vars for good. There's only one problem: they could be anywhere, literally. Even in another realm.
Darius is the seventeen-year-old Defender of Lokshire. He is used to living in a world where he can use his powers freely. He knows all kinds of magic. He can go for months on end without food or water, and when he turns twenty-five, he will become immortal. People in Lokshire name their kids after him. He is the most appreciated person in all of Lokshire. When he is injured during a battle with the Vars, his only chance at surviving is to travel to the human realm, where he loses all of his abilities as the Defender.
Caitlynn has been told all about the land of Lokshire, her whole life. Her parents always told her that the Vars would win the war. Does she believe any of it? Not at all. She thinks her parents are crazy, until some random guy appears out of nowhere on the floor of the commons area during lunch. His name? Darius. Her parents would want her to kill him, but something tells her she shouldn't. Instead, she hides him in a tree house in her backyard, teaching him how to be mortal. Everything seems to be going smoothly, until they find out that more soldiers from the Vars are on his trail. After making a desperate escape and searching for a place they could be safe, they take shelter in the home of a woman named Janya. They soon realize that Lokshire is more connected to the human realm than they think.
