Der achtjährige Laurie Kempt stirbt bei einem Autounfall und lässt seine Eltern, Magret und Ben Kempt undseine sechzehnjährige Schwester Emily in tiefer Trauer zurück. Aber was Lauries Familie nicht weiß: Laurie ist nicht wirklich tot. Er ist zu einem Geist geworden, der nun auf der Suche nach seiner Familie ist und gar nicht weiß, dass er nicht lebendig ist. Nachdem er sie gefunden hat muss er feststellen, dass ihn außer seiner Schwester niemand sehen kann.
Laurie verbringt jeden Tag mit seiner Schwester, bis er einen anderen Geist, der keinen Namen hat kennenlernt. Laurie verleiht ihm später den Namen Magnus mit der Begründung, dass einer seiner Freunde genauso hieße und auch immer genauso grimmig guckt. Von Magnus erfährt er was der Grund dafür ist das Laurie nicht tot ist: Er muss für seine Schwester jemanden finden, der auf sie aufpasst, denn Laurie verliert immer Laufe der Zeit immer größere Teile seiner Erinnerung. Zuerstversucht er es vor seiner Schwester geheim zu halten und findet für sie auch einen Jungen namens Adam, der in die selbe Schule wie Emily geht. Alles scheint gut zu laufen, doch dann vergisst Laurie seine Eltern und Emily kommt hinter sein Geheimnis...
