After the tragic passing of her grandmother, Zoe Dubois feels her entire world fall off of its axis. She feels lost without the woman who raised her. She never knew her parents, thinking that they died when she was a young baby. But, with the death of her grandmother, she comes to find that her parents are, in fact, alive and well and living only a short drive away.
When she moves in with her parents and her two siblings, the adjustment period is something she isn't sure how to handle. She feels excluded in her own home, like no one fully understands what she's going through.
During her first night in Gracetown, she meets the mystery boy of the town: Luke Beckett. Rumors float around the town about him and his family because no one knows who they are or what their true business in the small town is. Zoe befriends Luke on her first day at school, eventually learning the dark secrets of him and his family. She finally begins to put her life together with their help only to have it begin to fall apart again when a man who is thousands of years old begins to hunt her and Luke's family.
