Kate Winters meets a new girl, her rival's stepsister, Ella. As they get to know each other, Ella tells her that she wants to go to the upcoming prom, but because of her stepsister's
determination to be prom queen, she 'has' to stay home. Ella tells them she's gonna go anyway but doesn't show up on prom night when they go to meet her. Kate and her friends, Lina and Levi, go on a hunt to find Ella and her stepsister Bryn who also hadn't shown up, despite her thoughts on prom royalty, where they soon discover an unexpected secret.
