After the battle at the valley of the end, Naruto is left in a near death state, Sasuke is also injured and passed out but only has a broken leg and a few broken ribs. When Kakashi finally makes it to the two boys he is low on chakra from running at top speed to get to them. He is unable to make a shadow clone for one of the boys to be taken back to the village by. He has to make a decision.
