Her mouth went dry. She stared at him, their gazes clashing, melding. Sometime in the past, they had sat across from each other and idly played chess, their hands nearing by inches but missing again and again, never touching, eyes glancing together but not holding, voices probably mingling in idle chatter. Not once had they been aware of the potential, how the air could sizzle between them so that the very distance swelled with hot desire, how hearts would thunder in tandem, anticipating the next word, the possibility of a touch. How it would be impossible to look away, how they would be drawn closer with an inexorable, undeniable pull, until the soft words from her lips were but a foregone conclusion.
