As an opportunity presents itself for Nico to finally return home, he jumps at it without considering the daunting sacrifice he'll have to make. He claws his way back to Camp but finds it different to how he left it. There seems to be something hanging in the air. The gods are angry and uneasy, the ocean is acting out and his old friends are distant too. Above all, Rachel shows up with a confusing prophecy that hints at yet another great war. This time, with a force much more powerful than Gaia or Kronos. To have a fighting chance, Nico must find the Keys of Hades. What for exactly? His father won't say.
With the help of his friends, he sets out to recover the first key, the Sword of the Nazarene. But on this mission, he will not only have to face monsters, crazy visions and traumatising past but also the heavy tool his disappearance took on his most cherished relationships.

This story takes place approximately three years after the Trails of Apollo and the Tower of Nero. No later books are taken into consideration.
