Hollyfreckle, the new deputy, is surrounded by prophecies. But one simple prophecy seems to ring out: Follow the trail of willows and find the ones who disappear. Hollyfreckle guesses that it means one thing, follow a trail of willow trees to find Eagleflight, Lightningstorm, and the other cats who disappeared during the fire.
Hollyfreckle is ready to take on her new responsibilities, but she doesn't know if she can take care of Birchpaw and follow the Willow Trail. Meanwhile, a hidden clan seems to be following ThunderClan. And they don't seem friendly.
Also, Daisyleaf is falling ill. Her apprentice, Dewpaw, doesn't seem ready to take on duties if Daisyleaf dies. It seems impossible that the clan could fall, but through all the loss and hatred, Gingertail thinks that something is wrong with her apprentice, Birchpaw. Hollyfreckle is afraid that something is taking over her son, something that might end in a battle between Birchpaw and herself.

But when a strange cat takes his sister out of StreamClan on the day of their apprentice ceremony, he quickly realizes such hope has become impossible. Sunpaw just wants to prove to his clan, BreezeClan that he can become a great warrior. But it isn't as easy as it sounds. Even though his rival apprentice Slowpaw is much younger than him, he is always beaten in battle training and he can never catch nearly as much prey. His mentor doesn't make it any better either. The dream has a prophecy that states: Five cats, Frozen Storm, Birch Oaks, and Blowing feathers, chosen by Starclan must save the Forest, the Night, the Water, and the Sun from the destruction of Black Ashes and Golden wings. Snowpaw has to figure out what this prophecy means and save the four clans from the destruction of Black Ashes and Golden Wings.
