Eressëa was captured by orcs, tortured, and nearly killed. When hope seemed lost Estel and several elves from Rivendell appear and bring her and the other surviving captives back home. Almost two centuries have passed, before she was named second in command by Lord Elrond himself. By then, everyone knew of the flaming haired Elleth who survived dragon fire.
