Sam and Dean are trying to close the gates of hell by going through trials that God set up. They have done the other two
1. Bathe in the blood of a hellhound
2. Put a soul wrongfully put in hell unto heaven
Now it is time to do the final trial, cure a demon. They found a way to 'cure' a demon in the men of letters bunker but they don't know if it will work. They decide to capture Crowley and try to cure him. Right before Sam was going to do the last step Dean stopped him because he couldn't stand the thought of Sam dying. But what if he got there too late, turns out saying that Sam will die if he finished the trials was a ploy so Metatron could take all the angels from heaven. Sam finished the last step and now Crowley is a human, now Sam and Dean have to teach him how to be a hunter and get used to the human lifestyle.
