"Why. Why does it have to be you?" Draco whispered, his face contorted with anguish. She could feel him fighting an internal war; a war between what he had been told was wrong, and what his heart told him was right.

Val bought a shaking hand up and stroked it tenderly to the side of his face, stroking it with a butterfly's touch. He swallowed, trembling as if her touch had caused him physical pain.

"I'll never be good enough for you, Val." He looked away. Val found that both their eyes were wet.

"That's not tru-"

He cut her off. "I can't love you. I can't. But I promise. I promise ... I'll protect you." His head whipped around, and those grey eyes met the blue, as he whispered with steely determination, "Always.
