Kish and his mother are both born into slavery throughout the time period of the mid-1800s and are now just seeing the life of freedom at the end of the Civil War. with the reconstruction of the south, under the guidance of the union troop occupation, the new "freeman," that were the previous slaves to the plantations of the south and their owners, experiences their newly discovered freedom.
