Kenkichi is a young adult in a Japanese village where his father was the lord samrai over the area. After he is killed in a foriegn war, A man named Yohachi takes Kenkichi as his pupil and trains him not only in the way of the samurai, but also teaches him tools of the trade, usually left to the common folk. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, Yohachi destroys the entire village, slaughters the people, including Kenkichi's mother, and attempts to kill Kenkichi. Years after he recovers, Kenkichi is tracking down his former teacher, to end his treachery and avenge his mother and village!
