There's no doubt that Laurence and Aphmau have been through it all. Between Aphmau being abused, almost killed a few times, and being sent to an orphanage, things have gotten crazy. Yes, yes, we know that she has been put through it all, but this affects Laurence, her... well we don't know what he is to her, yet. Anyway, Laurence has stuck by her side and has been with her since... well almost her entire life.
That's just the basic gist of the series.
