John Kissinger's life is changed forever after he goes out into the bush to ensure the safe migration of the only things he has ever loved, birds. When he and a group of soldiers are attacked by Rebels, a group that wish to overthrow the oppressive regime of The City, he is force to flee for his life or die in a fight he wants nothing to do with. Led to a place called The Vine - an underground labyrinth that descends deep into the earth - by a masked soldier called Ammit, he meets humans, gods and monsters in his journey. Forced to confront the abuses of his past and the disappointment of his present, he learns the dire situation humanity is in, threatened by a chaos of their own making. Determined to save the world that threw him away, he must find what humanity has lost and put to rest the darkness that is growing deep beneath the ground.

Raelin Kissinger is a long way from home, a secluded village tucked far in the northern Wilds. Captive to the southern tribe of barbarians to save her people, Rae traded her life for theirs. A year after her sacrifice and with a growing desperation, Rae shows that she is willing to do whatever it takes to steal back her freedom. Jack Beaumont is a warrior disgraced, running from his grief and responsibilities that call him back home to the Western capitol of Augusta. Jack turns his sights on the expanse of wilderness and forest that lies between the West and the territory of the coastal barbarians, traversing as a ranger rather than facing his demons and duties that await his return to Augusta. As their paths collide and the two are forced into an uneasy partnership, the pair form an unlikely bond and set on a journey that will take them on ventures across their lands, into brutal battles and an impending war, and on the road that leads to discovering the binds that tie duty with love.
