Annabeth Chase died in Percy's arms. The infected stab wound was too much for any child of Apollo to heal, too much for any amount of ambrosia or nectar to save her. Without Annabeth, what was stoping Percy from declining his offer to become a god? Nothing. But having the love of your life die in your arms, knowing that there's so many things you could've done to prevent it leaves an affect on you.
