This is less a proper short story than an introductory character biography of Jackson Flynn.
Normally this is the sort of thing I write for myself to get to know a character who I am going to become close to, and this guy is one of my favourites.
Jackson is the hero of a number fo stories set in and around Trojel. He also guests in at least two of the novels of The Royal Scouts, making a proper nuisance of himself in particular in one of them.
Most of Flynns exploits revolve around the the career he fell into after leaving the mainland, and the bad fellows he fell in with.
He is never fortunate enough to manage to avoid the trouble that he almost always sees from a mile away.
Sadly, he's badly broken these days and is rarely far from rock bottom.
