1943 wurde Hamburg bombardiert. In einer dieser Nächte verlor Bärbel ihre Eltern und wurde nach Dresden gebracht. Ihr neues Zuhause wurde ein Heim für Kinder, die ihre Eltern in diesem schrecklichen Krieg verloren hatten. Es waren schon viele vor ihr da und noch mehr kamen nach ihr an. Ihren Kummer konnte sie mit niemandem teilen, denn sie hatte keine Freunde gefunden. Bärbel war schon immer sehr zurückhaltend und es fiel ihr schwer, auf andere Menschen zu zu gehen. Ein anderes Mädchen im Heim war sehr beliebt, aber sie machte der schüchternen Bärbel das Leben zur Hölle. Bärbel glaubte schon fast den Sinn ihres Lebens verloren zu haben, da kam ein neues Mädchen in das Heim: Esra. Schon nach kurzer Zeit wurden sie Freunde, doch Bärbel wusste nicht, was diese Freundschaft mit sich brachte.

"Why must you be like this?" she asked while pouting as she stood in front of me blocking me from shutting the door. "I'm not being like anything. I already told you this back in Germany.
