Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. Also, they are normal tattoos (except you don't get it or choose it, it just appears) so you can get rid of it. But if you do, your sm won't die but they will get very sick. The main characters of this story, Violet West (18) and Harper Black (20), both have a flame tattoo on their cheek. One day, Adelaide sees a carrier pigeon with a letter addressed to her. It flies away when she tries to pick it up and the pigeon leads her to the edge of human territory, which is about seven miles from her home. She then bumps into Oliver, who becomes her best friend. When her mother discovers she is writing letters to a dragon, she kicks Adelaide out. Little does she know that she kicked Adelaide out just as the Council was planning an attack on Adelaide's city. Adelaide and Oliver must find the Parliament of Peace and get them to help Adelaide's home town.
