Shinju Mai has been a spirit detective under Koenma for about ten years now. She's helped Genkai train Yusuke Urameshi for the Dark Tournament.  Mai has also been asked specifically to join Team Urameshi as the exception to the five man team rule, making her the sixth member, but, Yusuke doesn't know that she's already been to the tournament for six years prior, and has managed to constantly make it to the finals.
