After the war, disease plagued the world killing off more than three fourths of the population. Technology remained modern, life continued on for the survivors when a medicine was discovered, but things changed. 

The survivors went back to a monarchy rule, where the richest people were spread around the world and assigned kingdoms to rule as king and queen. 

And a curse was cast upon the entire world as punishment for the greed and selfishness that lead to our downfall in the first place. 

A curse that made it almost impossible to reproduce. The only way to reproduce is if a couple are truly meant for each other.  When it comes to soulmates, royals usually are bound to other royals.
