Fascism has taken over England. 

Alaric Donahue, the "Prime Minister", believes in a strict society. He divides schoolchildren intellectually, allowing only desirable pupils to take the most accredited exams. Those with less talent are given mediocre jobs, whilst others are expelled and abandoned by their families as a result of shame.

Ryann Adhearn, an Irish immigrant who is trapped in this society, shows extraordinary abilities in the classroom. Noticed by the government, she is forced to work alongside the most fierce politicians.
