What Jason desired most was to be bathed in the warm rich rays of pure sunlight that would engulf him in the wonders of vitamin D. Too bad that the radioactivity had become so harsh that the sun hadn't shone since the beginning of it all... two months ago.
  With all goodbyes being said and all hope being lost, the true meaning of life stems from the minds of the dwindling survivors and unity, oneness and determination is forged in the crucible of war.

Humanity. It goes beyond the common definition of: "a collective group of humans". It's a sense of benevolence. One may act; 'for the sake of humanity' and there are; 'crimes against humanity'. We're supposed to be proud of the human race, yet... humans are self-destructive. A group of elite alien race came to Earth and proved once and for all that we were our own worst enemy. They weren't wrong. but it was too late. They managed to save Earth- eradicating pollution and reversing global warming but they killed anyone who got in their way and indoctrinated the rest. Those who remained revolted. World War III resulted- killing the planet. The War ended but the battle was not won. The fight continues on, despite the destroyed society and Earth we call home. It's a relentless fight between those who want the world to go back to the way it was and those who still fight to hold on to their humanity- no matter what. We self-destruct but we also fight for what's right. It's a delicate balance- it's an art form. |WATTYS 2022 WINNER - HORROR| Shawn, a convicted criminal, never thought she'd see the sun again, let alone call another star system her home. When she's offered an out from her prison sentence, she embarks on a dangerous interstellar expedition along with 18 of Earth's most intelligent criminals. Their task is to set up a base on a supposedly habitable planet and prepare it for colonization. Although the planet has liquid water and a breathable atmosphere, it is believed to host only microbial life. However, upon arriving, Shawn and the rest of the colonists learn that assumption was grossly incorrect. In a brutal attack from rampaging wildlife, everyone but Shawn and four other colonists are killed. The five survivors retreat to the cavernous network beneath the ground seeking safety, but they soon come to a terrible discovery. These caves aren't ordinary caves, and they are no safer down under than they were on the surface. [][][] This was originally my entry for the 2021 Open Novella Contest, and it received an honorable mention! It has now been expanded into a full length novel. I used prompt number 53: "When wildlife starts rampaging, all the humans are forced underground. However, they come to a terrible discovery that being underground is no safer than being on the surface."

Chaucer, you have a wonderful opportunity here, are you going to take it or not?" Now, I am seriously confused, "Opportunity?" She takes advantage of my befuddled state and shoves the door open. Shit. The corners of her mouth pull up, and it's so unnatural, it takes me a moment to realize she's smiling. Major plastic surgery? Probably. Click. Did she just lock the door? She locked the door! I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on.
