As I reflect on my life, I realize that happiness isn't solely defined by wealth or material possessions. My mother and her sister, both African, worked tirelessly at a hospital as nurses in America. My father, an American construction worker from New York, met my mother at the hospital after he was injured on the job. They fell deeply in love, got married, and I, Emily Sebastian, was born. But life took a drastic turn when my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and my father mysteriously disappeared. After her passing, I found solace in living with my aunt. Now, at 20 years old, I'm navigating the complexities of life, love, and identity.

You know how when you do not want to talk and you say "I'm fine." You do. We have all been there. A fake smile, forced laugh, then you go home and cry. But, then, you find out a huge secret with holes missing. You want to find out all the answers. Basically, your life is full of twists and turns. Answers yo questions that you must find.

This isn't a story for the faint of heart. This is a story about a girl who loved a boy. A boy who couldn't love her back. This is a story about the bitter, the sweet, betrayals, second chances, and redemption. If your heart doesn't hurt by the end of this wreckage, then I haven't done my job properly.

He had rules for a reason, or thats what he said. I did something wrong I got punished. I spoke out of turn, I got punished. I looked at him or ate without permission, I got punished. Haven thats what they named me funny isn't it? Ironic really. They named me Haven because my mom would say I was her 'Safe Haven'. What a pile of shit that was. She left willingly, she didn't depart because of some tragic accident. My father didn't kill her. She left because she was a coward who didn't want kids. As soon as my older brother went to college she left. I knew she hated me. I was the product of her love with another man. A constant reminder that her life didn't work out the way it was planned. He who ever he was is a phantom in its own. A deep rooted fantasy never going to come true. My brother left, my mother left, my grandma ignored, and my father broke. They let me give up hope on escaping and then decided to play hero. But I haven't forgotten everything I went through. Guilt consumes my brother but I don't care, you don't get to leave and then buy a reprieve of trying to save someone who has been dead for years. Besides lets just be honest I reached my breaking point long ago.

When I said that I wanted to be different, of all the ways possible I didn't want it to be this way. I just feel like I am being played by my own words and I am being betrayed by myself and my mind, it is also not much of a help. . . . "You know, what makes the night sky even more beautiful, because our loved ones are there. Every day people lose someone they cherish and they go up there and join other stars. There are some things so horrible that we can't even think about it. Things that happen in the past. You bury them deep so no one will ever possibly be able to find it. You move on, make friends, find possible love. Then, everything you had ever feared or hidden comes back to haunt you all over again. Sorrow, love, anger, pain, and betrayal. What comes next? --- EDITING AUG 2019: This story has been five years in the making, and my skills as a writer and an editor have definitely improved. But hey, come along for the ride.
