Their powers have a lot to do with what's wrong with them. This story may be about Jasper, but him and Fred go hand in hand through it all for a very long time. It got harder to be there for each other when Elizabeth took off with Fred not too long after the experiments, trying to ensure that her daughter lived a normal or at least normal-ish life. Jasper didn't have it much better... He was trained to be a monster.
