Each person in Lark's city has a designated "Leaving Day." When a person leaves, they disappear for a full 24 hours right off the face of the earth. Nobody knows what they do there, and when people come back, they don't remember, they just know they have gone. Once a person turns 16, they get assigned their Leaving Day. Lark is just about to go to her first Leaving, when rumors spread about people disappearing on their Leaving Days and never coming back. Lark goes on a search for the truth and a race against time to figure out if her entire life is a lie...before she Leaves, too, and maybe even disappears herself.
