A Game of Cats and Mice
In the divided town of Blackridge, wealth and power reign supreme at the top of the hill, while struggle and hardship fester at the bottom. The ruthless Thornfeld family, a dynasty of cold-hearted elites, controls everything-the land, the law, and the fates of those who dare to live beneath them. Among their many victims is the Holiday family, a lineage of hardworking fruit pickers who have tilled the same soil for generations, only to remain at the mercy of their landlords.
When Heather Holiday steps up to make the family's monthly payment, she is met with Portia Thornfeld's usual cruelty-a veiled threat that the small sum she's gathered might not be enough to keep the Holidays from losing what little they have left. But Heather has heard these threats before, and she refuses to bend to the Thornfelds without a fight.
Her mother, Sylvette Holiday, once attempted to reason with the Thornfelds, but learned long ago that diplomacy meant nothing to people who thrived on control. As Sylvette watches history repeat itself, she warns Heather that brute strength won't be enough-strategy, intelligence, and cunning will be their greatest weapons if they are to survive.
But the Thornfelds don't take challenges lightly. As tensions rise, secrets buried in Blackridge's past begin to resurface, and Heather soon realizes that the fight for her family's future may uncover a war far older-and far deadlier-than she ever imagined.
