Abie is a Madren man living in Ckastia whose nationality makes it difficult to find work in a city still bitter from the war seventeen years ago. To care for his family, he accepts an offer to work as a testing subject for a mad witch who lives in a creepy tower. Maeva is a witch who hears voices in her head and needs an ordinary person to test her invented spells. To complete her work and protect others from her fate, she must hide the truth of her madness with the help of her sister. Natasha is a near identical copy of her witch sister if not for her complete lack of magic. To fulfill her greatest desire, she reaches out to a figure from Abie's past who appears to have a secret even darker than his tendency for black magic. In a desperate attempt to prevent a second war, the testing subject, the witch, and the sister must test the strength of their relationships as well as their own power to save the city of Portwenn in its darkest time. But as the truth emerges, even the power of the gods may not be enough to quell the rising tensions.

For over 2000 years, a clan from the Bloodvale Mountains deep to the north have dubbed themselves as the "chosen ones of the Gods" after a mystic altar was discovered by historians, which granted the first ever Acolytes their powers. These powers were meant to be used for good, however, after the Master Elder corrupted the teachings written, it turned into a religious sect of murderers, hellbent on making their people the only people in the world. Wars rage out between humanity and the Acolytes. After one significant young man takes over the militia in Borias, and is forced to lead the armies of the Alliance, he helps turn the war heavily in the favor of humanity. However, some Acolytes remain, and now pose a bigger threat than ever before. Sarrah, who was once a member of their sect, discovers the corruption and seeks out the only person she believes can help her stop her old clan from destroying everything she eventually comes to love.
