She is perfect, inhumanly perfect that is...

Sirens aren't mermaids they are humanly birds. Birds with stunning grace and beauty. All for survival. Every siren is born and raised until she becomes of age, to go into the human world and find someone to reprouduce with.

Humans can't love, humans all humans couldn't love especially a siren, they are materialistic creatures.

When Gem meets Jarred, a human boy she starts questioning everything she has always known.

Gem has always been empty, her and her whole flock had been. When the truth came down to it, every siren knows that beauty isn't pretty, beauty is a weapon. When she starts to realize joy and happiness was meant to be like, she lets herself submerge in his world knowing it might be the most dangerous gamble a non-human could ever take.

When they leave leave their flock they don't just start to grow old they become ugly even disfigured maybe. When Gem looks into Jarreds eyes there is so much more than just admiration. But what if shes wrong... would Jarred love her after the pretty is gone? Does love actually exist for a her?
