Wat doe je als de zon niet meer op komt en de maan en de sterren niet verdwijnen? Wat doe je als je denk dat je de rest van je leven in duisternis zal moeten leven? En je wordt opgeslokt door het leven zonder besef van tijd en datum?
Dit overkomt de 16-jarige Esmee Wanners. Het lijkt alsof er een vreemde duisternis over de stad valt. Het verkeer dat uit de stad gaat verdwijnt in een sluier van mist die de stad omringt. Ze gaan op in rook en komen niet meer terug. Hebben ze zichzelf in veiligheid gebracht? Is er licht aan de andere kant? En waarom komt niemand meer de stad in? Wat is er met de buitenwereld aan de hand?
Zoveel vragen maar volgens Esmee is er een teken van hoop: de maan en de sterren. Ze schijnen nog. Dit betekend dat de zon er nog wel moet zijn. Maar waar? En hoe heeft dit kunnen gebeuren? Al snel verhuld de stad haar geheimen. En Esmee? Zal de stad nog te redden zijn?

But instead, my life turned out to be the opposite of normal. And so it was for Chiara, Blake, Jake, Rowan, Nova, and Dijon. To tell our story, we need to go all the way back to the beginning. Before we were even born. It all started 30 years ago. April 5, 2003. a class got into an accident and when the survivors woke up, they realized something was wrong. they got powers , they got taken by scientist who started calling them the hollows. It took almost a month before they were rescued by Mr. Knight, they got taken to a secret place where they could live peacefully. that's a lie, one of the students wanted revenge and not stay hidden, so the group seperated. Every year another person got powers, and so, the search continued. But there was always one question on mr. Knight mind: Why 12 children the first time, and only one per year after that? And one thing was for sure: whenever someone gained powers, they had to give something up in return. It was never a choice. It was just the way it was. So, now that I've explained a bit about how this all started, let's fast forward to the present. It's now 2033. Mr. Knight has found 19 children, and Mr. Douglas, the leader of the other group, has found 10. That means... the 30th child is out there somewhere. Who will it be?
